For further information on reinstalling the S60 Car Mirror Replacement Glass to the Frame, and why your S60 mirror fell off the frame. Please read this.
In the last 15 years, we have been selling a lot of mirrors that the glass has fallen out of the frame for no reason. One of the biggest problems cars has been the Volvo S60. There are another 20 or 30 makes and models that has had this problem in recent years. Right now you are seeing a black pad. The manufacture of this product used a Mylar black pad, to separate the glass from the heating element on your vehicle. Most side view mirrors are glued to the frame that is attached motor using automotive silicone, acrylic glue or urethane. Behind this black pad is a heating element. In the past, many European car manufactures did not use first surface chromium mirror, and those mirrors. which we think was made of aluminum oxide would turn brown due to absorption of the heating element which burns the mirror glass. So they tried to fix the problem, however your mirror was glued to the black Mylar pad using a rubber based spray adhesive. So a good idea, that now has gone bad.
How to properly Glue this mirror back into the frame.
1. You have to first clean the surface of the black pad. Being contaminated by the previous adhesive, it needs to be removed. We suggest the use of a WET RAG and the use of NAIL POLISH REMOVER to clean any debris, black flakes, and residue. This will insure the automotive silicone that we suggest you use to adhere the mirror to the glass. Nail Polish remover contains 10% acetone which will clean it most efficiently. DO NOT USE ANY FORM OF SCRAPING DEVICE as you will damage the heating element behind the black pad.
2. You now need to glue the mirror to the frame. We sell the silicone for this mirror. You can find it in the additional items to order list. If however you have a non latex silicone (known as construction silicone) then yes, you can use your product. To help the heating element to function properly, we suggest dotting the black pad with the silicone starting at the center, every 1/4 x 1/4 inch 1/2 inch from the frame edge. When placing the mirror into the frame these small beads of silicone will meet creating a silicone pad for the heat to absorb into the new mirror evenly. Like it did from the factory. The drying time at 70 deg. is 4 hours. Expect longer drying time as temperatures get lower. Do not think of using Crazy Glue, Gorilla glue. However if you are a glass shop or repair facility and have a primer less urethane, this is fine to use.
3. After install, get painters or masking tape, and tape the mirror to the plastic frame you placed the mirror in or to the housing shell. This will insure that the mirror will not fall out or shift during drying times. We do not recommend driving the car while the glue dries.
